The article is intended to bring into scientific consideration a new historical source — the “Notes” of the Swiss teacher of the Emperor Alexander I F.-C. La Harpe. This source appeared as a result of a thorough work of La Harpe by commenting his correspondence with Alexander and contains many unique details and judgements about Russian court at the end of 18th — beginning of the 19th c. as well as a start of “alexandrine” liberal reforms.

In the article an attempt is made to generalize and analyse all known data on the educational level of the Russian generals of 1812. The author considers that the Russian generals of that time in the majority of cases had no regular education. Comparison of the data on education of the elite and of the whole Russian generals allows to draw a conclusion that up to the middle of 19th century representatives of the higher bureaucracy had no regular education.

The analysis of the perception of the Chillon Castle by Russian travelers in the late XVIIIth–XIXth centuries illustrates the mechanism of adoption of new images in Russian culture, the belles-lettres playing a key role in this process. Within a short period of time the Chillon Castle became a new pilgrimage in Russian cultural life, which was in many respects determined by the works of Rousseau, Byron, Karamzin and Zhukovsky.

The article depicts the history of intellectual dialogue between teacher and student (V. I. Gerrier and M. S. Korelin). Purpose — to collect additional material for the study of the «Guerrier school,» — the special community of the historians of the Moscow University. The author comes to the conclusion that Gerrier regarded Korelin as a successor to his scientific tradition and after his successor death in fact was «childless», despite the large number of students in Russian universities and abroad.
