The article concerns the activity of the St. Petersburg Department of the Moscow Society for Religious education, targeted to give the western Christians the knowledge about the affairs’ state of the Eastern Church. The author identifies the literature published and translated by Russian theologians and members of clergy for western Christians from 1871 to 1880. She describes the work’s methods of the Department. The response of western theologians was the publication of works about the Eastern Church. Members of the St. Petersburg Department managed to fulfill designated tasks despite the short period of activity. They illuminated as much as possible the state of the contemporary Church, a church history and theology and assisted western and east Christians in the dialog’s development.

The author brings to a scientific attention two unknown letters of bishop Luke (Voyno-Jasenetsky). The letters add remarkable characteristic traits to the image of the Sainted Hierarch and some new facts to known episodes of his biography. Letters covers the Tashkent period of bishop Luke’s life: the first letter was written on March, 10th, 1928 and the second letter — on July, 20th, 1929. To priest Martin Rimsha was addressed both letters. Sometimes this name appears in the literature about the Turuhansk period of the exile of Holy hierarch, however the addressee’s person is of interest, therefore the publication’s author represents his biographic data that have been restored according to archival documents. They are published for the first time. In the introduction the author describes the addressee’s biography, priest Martin Rimsha, and reports about his activity in the Turuhansky edge where remarkable church figures were in exile

Displaced persons camps with significant activities of the Russian Orthodox clergy were established and developed after the World War II. The Orthodox community in the Wurttemberg land of Germany was one of the centers for the War refugees. The father superior of the community was priest Adrian Rymarenko future Archbishop of Rockland Andrew, who served as the dean of the Berlin Cathedral in 1943–1945. The article deals with peculiarities of the Wendlingen community founding and developing process. Father Adrian’s letters to the Archpriest of the German Diocese, Metropolitan Seraphim (Ljade), as well as other unknown documents from the German Diocese Archive of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad and the Novo-Diveyevo Convent (New York) have been for the first time published. The author of the article has shown that this small Orthodox community overcame the post-War troubles and hardship, restored the Church services’ circle and became a Christian missionary center. The author analyses the guidelines of community activities. Metropolitan Seraphim advisedly gave a special status to the community for not only the support a Church service but also organization of a Church manufactory. The author investigated archives sources and found the list of Community members. He discovered among them outstanding clergymen of the Russian Church in Exile and future clerics of the Orthodox Church of America.

Letters from the Holy Mt. Athos of the archimandrite (since 1947 he was a bishop) Cassian (Bezobrazov) to archpriest Sergius Bulgakov and Lion А. Zander covers the period of the Second World War. The letters’ author was isolated from his colleagues in teaching at the Orthodox theological institute of St. Sergiy Radonezskiy in Paris. The fragment of the correspondence of three eminent church-public figures allows of looking from within at the professorial corporation’s life of the Theological institute of St. Sergiy Radonezskiy and better understanding of the atmosphere in which this part of the Russian abroad have made their service for the Church in the XXth century. Many teachers, graduates and students of the Theological institute were mentioned in documents that helped to clarify unknown facts of their biography. The characteristic features of the personal and theological growth of Archimandrite Cassian uncover themself in a 124 Афонские письма архимандрита Кассиана (Безобразова) new fashion. The plan of the non-published manuscript of the father Cassian’s monography devoted to research the New Testament’s bases of a Christian world outlook and its author’s definition were found in the Theological institute’s archive. At the same time, the letters give the chance to estimate the scale of the international contacts of the Theological institute and expand the information about the circle of persons, connected with its corporation. These documents give the opportunity to dispute accusing the Theological institute of contacts with ecumenical Masonic circles. Also published documents permit to clean archimandrite Cassian of the suspicions of the cooperation with the fascist power during the War. The letters were found in the archival funds of archpriest Sergius Bulgakov and L. A. Zander at the St. Sergiy Radonezsky orthodox theological institute in Paris.

Paul Gavrilyuk recently reconstructed Georges Florovsky’s dissertation, “Hertsen’s Philosophy of History”, the complete text of which was previously considered lost. According to the report of Alexander Izgoev, G.V. Florovsky presented the summary of his dissertation in 19 theses during his dissertation defense in Prague on 3 June 1923. The typescript of these 19 theses, bearing the title «The Dissertation’s Theses of Privatdozent Georges Florovsky: «The Hertsen’s Philosophy of History»» was recently discovered by Matthew Baker in the Andrew Blane Papers. This document is published here for the first time. The 19 theses support the Gavrilyuk’s hypothesis that the June 1923 redaction of the dissertation consisted of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion.
