The article is devoted to an important problem in the relations between the Patriarchates of Moscow and Constantinople at the beginning of the 21st century. The author provides a complex analysis of the infl uence exercised by the ecclesiastical crisis in the Ukraine on the relations between Moscow, Phanar and Kiev. Special attention is paid to the activities of non-recognized Ukrainian ecclesiastical structures and their attempts to join the Orthodox world by way of obtaining recognition on the part of the Church of Constantinople. Their frequent joint meetings held at Phanar proved fruitless; however, they were quite illustrative as to the double standards of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in its policies towards the ecclesiastical schisms in the Ukraine. An important role here, according to the author, was played by the Ukrainian civil authorities, although the relations between Church and state as well as the events of the internal ecclesiastical life in the Ukraine (such as the attempted dialogue between the Ukrainian Autonomous Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate of Kiev) are left outside the framework of the present research; facts concerning these areas are cited only when they contribute to the understanding of the processes under analysis. Proceeding from the data of Russian and Ukrainian ecclesiastical periodicals, the author maintains that the problem of the religious life in the Ukraine has long ago overstepped the boundaries of a “local confl ict” and that the “Ukrainian question” plays the part of a powerful catalyst in the inter-Orthodox relations. The Patriarchate of Moscow aims at preserving its status in the Orthodox world. As for the Patriarchate of Constantinople, it keeps voicing certain claims at strengthening its position as primus inter pares among the Orthodox Patriarchates, dreams about convening a new “Ecumenical Council” and puts the Ukraine at stake in its relations with Moscow.

The author considers the historical circumstances of the creation of the Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Churches under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Western Europe in 1931. This event was a crucial one for the fates of the Orthodox Diaspora in the 20th century. It exemplifi ed two ecclesiological concepts bearing on the role of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the Orthodox Diaspora ascribed to it by the participants of the discussion. The first of these concepts maintains that only the patriarchate of Constantinople has the right of jurisdiction over the Orthodox Diaspora, while the second one rules this necessity out and emphatically states that the jurisdiction over their respective Diasporas should be exercised by the national Churches. The opposition of these two concepts has become a characteristic trait of the Orthodox history in the 20th century.

The reception of classical psychoanalysis in the Russian religious thought and the modern psychoanalytic theories of religion

Antonov Konstantin (2014) "The reception of classical psychoanalysis in the Russian religious thought and the modern psychoanalytic theories of religion ", Vestnik Pravoslavnogo Sviato-Tikhonovskogo gumanitarnogo universiteta. Seriia I : Bogoslovie. Filosofiia, 2014, Iss. 55, pp. 47-67 (in Russian).

DOI of the paper: 10.15382/sturI201455.47-67
The author considers the principal moments of the understanding of religion in psychoanalysis as perceived by Russian thinkers of the first half and the middle of the 20th century. The author indicates the conditions and context of the perception of psychoanalysis in Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the main contiguity points shared by the psychoanalytic understanding of religion and its treatment by the Russian symbolists, mainly by Vyacheslav Ivanov. He proceeds to consider the perception and criticism of psychoanalysis off ered by Russian thinkers of the fi rst half and the middle of the 20th century: Father P. Florensky, N. A. Berdyayev, S. L. Frank, B. P. Vysheslavtsev and S. A. Levitsky. The final part of the article contains conclusions bearing on the general meaning of this perception and its potential signifi cance for the Russian psychology of religion. Beyond any doubt, Russian philosophers have managed to enrich their understanding of religion by making use of the attainments of psychoanalysis. They have productively used even such ideas as had been conceived by the founder of psychoanalysis as instrumental in criticizing religion. Alongside repetition of the ideas common in the criticism of psychoanalysis, they have put forward a number of original arguments proceeding from an immanent analysis of psychoanalytical ideas indicative of the internal problems that exist in the psychoanalytical approach to religion. They have also outlined ways of overcoming them within the framework of Christian thought. In a number of cases they have evidently foreshadowed the interpretation of psychoanalytical doctrines in Western Christian thought.

The author presents an analysis of an empirical research concerning religion in the worldview of atheists, representatives of today’s youth. She focuses on the results obtained from studying their values and conceptions, emotional attitudes towards religion displayed by atheists and their behavior in religious context. The findings of the research have shown that the values that characterize the representatives of the group under study are subjective and nominative; that their conceptions of religion are characterized by superficiality and lack of system; that their emotional attitude can be defined as self-distancing and equanimity. The behavior of many atheists is predetermined by some kind of religious experience in the past, from which they would like to distance themselves. Among today’s young people, there are those who identify themselves as atheists, but their attitude towards religion is spontaneous and fragmentary, based on an experience of superficial religious enculturation.

The Sophiology features the mystical and poetic intuition of the so-called “femme éternelle” as one of the basic concepts of its doctrine. However, the analysis of concrete sophiological concepts shows that this trend in thought was characterized by a fairly strong internal competition of projects. Trying to build up such sophiology as would, in the eyes of its creators, correspond to the Orthodox ecclesiastical tradition, individual authors attempted to purify their constructions from certain aspects of Solovyov’s sophiological ideas. But an unbiased examination of certain sophiological doctrines shows that the struggle for a truly “ecclesiastical” Sophia in reality led to a re-thinking of the very notions of ecclesiasticism and tradition - on the basis of theoretical refl ection over the data provided by immediate religious experience which was perceived by its subjects as a personal revelation. The Sophiology of Father P. Florensky constitutes one of such attempts. In his book “The Pillar and Ground of the Truth” Sophia represents a carefully thought-over philosophical and theological concept representing an onto-symbolic representation of the Truth, which is not so much conceived rationally as by way of religious praxis. Central for such conceiving is the notion of “ecclesiasticism”. The experience of building-up a religious and philosophical synthesis found in the book of Florensky in reality presupposed (in view of the alleged traditional character of his constructions and his appeals to the archaically stylized medieval imagery and symbols) the emergence of a substantially new style of religiousness which found wide recognition in the quickly modernizing Russian society of the beginning of the 20th century.

Between the Monad and the One: at the sources of the ontological dualism

The author of the article describes the philosophical complexity and the ideological coherence of the two earliest philosophical concepts of the One belonging to early Pythagoreans and to the Eleatics, as well as the connection between the concept of the One and the ontological and epistemological dualism. The analysis of the concept of the One in the early Pythagorean school is based on the fragments of Philolaus and on the extant material concerning the science of music and geometry in this school. Part 1 considers the interrelation of two fragments by Philolaus: according to one of them, at the center of the Cosmic Space (Sphere) there is the One which is identified with fire; according to the other fragment, the multitude of things were brought into being by the harmonious corresponding of the limiting and the limitless. Part 2 describes the understanding of harmony, musical consonances, tetraktys, geometrical constructions, the expressible and the inexpressible in the early Pythagorean school. Part 3 considers the concept of the Central Fire. In Part 4 the author demonstrates the connection existing between the ideas of the early Pythagorean school mentioned above and the key topoi of the philosophy of the Eleatics. The author concludes that the amalgamation of monism and ontological and epistemological dualism - one of the richest philosophical, scientifi c and religious phenomena in the history of thought - has its roots in the doctrines of Pythagoreans and Eleatics.

The ≪Divine Design≫ argument in the English philosophy of nature in the 17th century

Koshelev Igor' (2014) "The ≪Divine Design≫ argument in the English philosophy of nature in the 17th century ", Vestnik Pravoslavnogo Sviato-Tikhonovskogo gumanitarnogo universiteta. Seriia I : Bogoslovie. Filosofiia, 2014, Iss. 55, pp. 107-120 (in Russian).

The article deals with the development of the teleological argument (the design argument) as elaborated in the works of the English natural philosophers Robert Boyle and John Ray. The argument in question constitutes one of the most convincing proofs of the existence of the rational design and is primarily known from the “fifth way” of Thomas Aquinas and from the “Natural Theology” by W. Paley. However, the basis for the modern research in this field was created precisely by the above-mentioned natural philosophers in the context of scientific revolution of the 17th century and the mechanistic philosophy that this epoch gave rise to. Recognizing the irrevocability of the conceptualization of the “teleological argument” in Paley for the modern times, the author analyzes the early stages of its formation. The main part of the article is devoted to the analysis of “The Treatise of the Final Causes” by Boyle and “The Wisdom of God Manifested in the Works of the Creation” by Ray. Conclusions as to the signifi cance of these works for the consequent development of teleology are given in the final part of the article.
