This article deals with the theological and pedagogical aspect of the Unabridged Church Slavonic Dictionary (1899–1900) by Archpriest Grigory Dyachenko, which is not studied so far which became one of the last fundamental lexicographic compositions of the Synod period in Russia. The article ascertains the volume and analyses the content of materials in the fi elds of biblical studies, liturgics, heresiology, church history, dogmatic and moral theology as well as canon law included in the dictionary. Besides, the article establishes the main circle of lexicographic and theological sources employed by G. Dyachenko. Based on the fi ndings of the article, the author makes the conclusion that the Dictionary by G. Dyachenko cannot be regarded as an independent scholarly work in respect of theology. This article presents the system of regulatory requirements and a study guide on writing and evaluation of the essay as a competitive task of the All-Russian Contest of School Students Foundations of the Orthodox Culture. It also substantiates the introduction of the term “theological and linguistic competence” in scientifi c and pedagogical circulation. It highlights that the contest essay is a complex creative task connected with the participant’s creation of an original text based on the model of a proposed theological topic. Following the defi nition given, the article extablishes the compositional parts of the contest essay, i.e. 1) introduction, 2) the main part (it includes the formulation of the problem and a commentary on it, explains the stance of the author, expresses the writer’s own opinion and its justifi cation), 3) conclusion. The article states that the contest essay should identify in the participants the complex of universal study activities that they should command (person-related, regulatory, cognition-related, communicative) in the framework of forming the theological and linguistic competence. The regulatory requirements for writing the contest essay have allowed the author of the article to identify and substantiate the system of assessment criteria that takes into account 1) the content, 2) speech coherence, 3) orthography and grammar. In its conclusion, the article argues that this system of assessment criteria is generally capable of producing an objective picture of results of creative work of the participants of the contest related to writing the essay.

The study is in line with the problem relevant for modern pedagogical science related to the formation of competencies in future teachers necessary for the effective organization of pedagogical communication in various educational and speech situations. In this regard, the work reflects the experience of teaching such educational disciplines as "Pedagogical Rhetoric" and "Ontolinguistics," which for the first time began to be implemented in spiritual educational institutions of the Russian Orthodox Church since 2015 at the Department of Pedagogy of the Historical and Philological Faculty of PSTGU. When presenting the material, a justification is given for the relevance of including educational disciplines in the structure of educational programs aimed at the formation of rhetorical and ontopsycholinguistic competencies among students. A description of the educational programs in the disciplines "Pedagogical Rhetoric" and "Ontolinguistics" implemented within the framework of the bachelor's and master's studies of the Department of Pedagogy of PSTGU is given: their concept and content, purpose and planned results of development, as well as educational and methodological support and forms of intermediate certification are described. It is noted that the basic theoretical setting of the developed curricula is the statement that linguistic ability is a universal and distinctive feature of man as an image of God, which the teacher is called upon to constantly improve together with the spiritual and moral qualities of the person. It is concluded that the presented author's curricula of the disciplines "Pedagogical Rhetoric" and "Ontolinguistics" are to a certain extent innovative, their concept and content are due to the current trends in the development of modern humanitarian science (linguistics, pedagogy, psychology), as well as the formation of an interdisciplinary scientific approach that contributes to the formation of "whole knowledge" about the studied phenomena of pedagogical reality.
