This article analyses the existence of several religious phenomena common in western studies of religion — especially the idea of a quasi-religion. It differentiates between two approaches to the study of quasi-religion: one phenomenological and the other sociological. It studies the theories proposed by Paul Tillich, John Smith, and Arthur Greil. The author of the present article agrees that these ideas are based on real theological prerequisites. The idea of a quasi-religion helps us to understand the connection and interdisciplinary rapport between theology and religious studies during the whole of the twentieth century.

The paper deals with antireligious campaign of 1950-1960s as reflected in fi ction and school literature curriculum. This period is interesting because it was exactly the time when scientific atheism and Soviet study of religion came to existence. But as long as it was growing, in fact it had very little impact on propaganda yet. In our research we are to prove two hypotheses: fi rst, to succeed among young generation, atheistic propaganda was to be supported by new fiction serving ideas of atheism. Second, campaign aimed against religion must have been reflected in school teaching. To prove these theses we will go through the press and analyze main motives and subjects of atheistic novels created in 1960s.

This paper provides an analysis of contemporary Russian academic literature on spirituality. The authors single out key features of these texts, especially their approach to defi ning their subject. They formulate major semantic contexts within which spirituality is discussed by sociologists and psychologists, as well as practical implications of the term. The authors compare the academic usage of the term ‘spirituality’ with its usage in everyday language; the comparison is based on a mass survey conducted in 2006. In the literature that served as the material for the present study, we can observe political, cultural and religious aspects of spirituality. It can be viewed as a form of patriotism, as religious worldview, as overcoming the limitations of human nature, as erudition, as a means to fi ght the non-spiritual character of modern society, or as an aspiration towards the ideal. The overall fuzziness of the term is a consequence of its emotional and utopian connotations in the Russian language.

Since early 1990s sociologists of religion have been noticing in the USA and Europe an appearance of a group, self-identifying as spiritual, but not religious. The word spirituality has been gaining popularity on political, media, and scientifi c levels. Alongside this tendency the number of «spiritual but not religious» grows. First, this group was discovered among baby-boomers with higher level of individualism, aversion of religious institutes, reaching out for personal experience. Now these groups are discovered in different countries, Russia included. This paper reviews several surveys conveyed in the US, Great Britain, Austria. Surveys show that the group of spiritual but not religious is usually heterogeneous, with unifying feature for them would be not common notion of spirituality, but mostly general distrust of religion. But only a part of them can be called active «bricoleurs», that is, constructs own worldview, using elements of both Eastern and Western religions, as well as New Age and secular sources.

The phenomenon of theological incorrectness is primarily the result of the coexistence of two parallel levels of religious representations constituting a continuum of cognitive complexity. This article presents results of the replication experiment based on the classical study by J. L. Barrett and F. Keil (1996) aimed at diff erentiating levels of implicit anthropomorphic and explicit non-anthropomorphic reasoning about God. The data which were obtained in the experiment and based on the Russian Orthodox sample of Theology students have confi rmed the cross-cultural universality and stability of the phenomenon of theological incorrectness described by J. L. Barrett and now widely accepted in the cognitive religious science. In a real-thinking mode aimed at rapid solutions to problems, complicated and cognitively cumbersome theological concepts do undergo systematic deformation and optimisation and acquire anthropomorphic properties corresponding to our default ontological assumptions. Such a tacit deformation seems to be independent from theological representations and occurs even in the presence of explicitly held non-anthropomorphic concepts of God.

Vasiliy Zenkovsky (1881–1962; Russ. Василий Зеньковский), the renowned philosopher, theologian and educationalist, was a founder of one of the earliest Russian systems for psychological analysis of religion. His ideas are associated with the most important achievements in the psychology of religion of the early 20th century, e.g. the works by William James and Theodore Flournoy. Zenkovsky’s system was also infl uenced by Husserl’s phenomenology, as well as by Dilthey’s ideas. This paper addresses the role played by the culture of Russian émigrés, especially its perception of events in Russia, critical attitude to the theory and practice of militant atheism. The paper discusses methodological principles of psychology of religion (biological, phenomenological, social psychological) proposed by Zenkovsky, his view of the structure of religious life and the place of emotion and intellect in this structure, his understanding of child’s religiosity and main factors of religious upbringing. In the fi nal section, the paper draws conclusions as to the signifi cance of Zenkovsky’s ideas about psychology of religion and its place in the history of psychology of religion in Russia.
