Abstract

The paper describes a discussion as to the interpretation of Jn 8. 44 between the professors of Moscow and Kiev Theological Academies M. M. Tareev and D. I. Bogdashevsky (the future bishop Vasiliy). The discussion took place in 1903—1904 in the academic journals Богословский вестник (Theological Bulletin) and Труды Киевской духовной академии (Proceedings of Kiev Theological Academy). On the basis of the original Greek text of Jn 8. 44, M. M. Tareev rejected the traditional translation «for he [the devil] is a liar and the father of it [the lie]» and proposed his own variant based on the conception that God is the Creator of the whole creation and therefore Father of all: «he [the devil] says... that the liar is his Father too [God]». D. I. Bogdashevskiy advocated the traditional view not only examining the specifics of the Biblical texts but also putting forward theological arguments. The controversy demonstrated the necessity of an integrated approach to the study of the Bible.
