The paper gives an outline of Biblical studies in Russia during the last two centuries. It presents two contrasting tendencies as main factors in the development of Russian Biblical studies in the 19th century. On the one hand, it is the Western historical and philological approach orientated towards the humanistic tradition of the study of classical ancient authors. On the other hand, it is the Russian ecclesiastical and dogmatic approach manifesting itself in the unreadiness to adopt results of the Western science. Areas of study where particularly successful research was carried out in the period in question are the history of the church (above all, Russian and Byzantine), canon law and the history of the church service. These areas are characterised by collaboration between the lay and the ecclesiastical science. Besides, Slavonic Biblical studies and the translation of the Bible are considered undoubtedly successful areas. After 1917 the distance separating Russian Biblical studies from European increased in conditions of isolation.

The paper examines a little-studied topic in the history of Russian lexicography of the 19th century. The object of the research is two dictionaries of the Church Slavonic language: the «Dictionary of Locutions from Liturgical Books» by Revd. A. Nevostruev and the «Complete Dictionary of the Church Slavonic Language» by Revd. G. D’iachenko. The main areas of the research are relationships between these dictionaries, their textological similarities and differences, as well as D’iachenko’s use of Nevostruev’s manuscript. The aim of the paper is to determine the volume and the character of influence of the little-studied handwritten dictionary by A. Nevostruev on the work of G. D’iachenko. The paper presents results of a comparative analysis of all entries in the letter «D» in both dictionaries, which reveals full or partial coincidences. The pattern of borrowings and reasons for abridgements and omissions are examined as well. The paper analyses and explains reasons for the inconsistency in the choice of entry verb forms in the dictionary by G. D’iachenko. Besides, we explain the principle according to which G. D’iachenko chose articles for borrowing.

On publication of «Dictionary of locutions from liturgical books» by protopriest Alexander Nevostruev

Kaluzhnina Nadezhda (2014) "On publication of «Dictionary of locutions from liturgical books» by protopriest Alexander Nevostruev ", Vestnik Pravoslavnogo Sviato-Tikhonovskogo gumanitarnogo universiteta. Seriia III : Filologiia, 2014, Iss. 36, pp. 37-46 (in Russian).

DOI of the paper: 10.15382/sturIII201436.37-46
The topic of the article is the publication of protopriest A. Nevostruev’s Dictionary of Locutions from Liturgical Books, which is a dictionary of the Church Slavonic language. The main problem related to the dictionary is the fact that by the time of its completion (the middle of the 19th century), standards of lexicography were different from those of the present time. As the dictionary has remained in the form of unfinished manuscript and has never been published, its text is sometimes difficult to read and does not contain lists of abbreviations, sources and notations. The aim of this paper is to analyse some specifics of the edition of the dictionary and to facilitate the access to the list of publications related to the dictionary. The web-page of the dictionary on the PSTGU site contains PDF files of texts which have been published up to now. The preliminary edition of the manuscript has been carried out in Вестник ПСТГУ, серия III: Филология (available at the Research Department of Manuscripts of the Russian State Library). The scientific novelty of the paper is made up by an analysis of some particular details of the edition. For example, with regard to the font an attempt is made to relate it to the author’s attempt to render the Church Slavonic text as comprehensible to the reader as possible. We suppose that abbreviated names of sources containing Greek translations of the Old Testament are abbreviations of well-known manuscripts and editions. The paper examines incomplete vocabulary entries which include derivative words and Hebrew place names lacking in the Russian translation of the Old Testament. These entries may indicate the author’s attempt to register discrepancies between the Church Slavonic and the Synodal Russian translations of the Old Testament. The main result of the paper is a description of the Dictionary, which is a previously unpublished and not easily accessible work of Russian lexicography

О неизданных сочинениях святителя Димитрия Ростовского: к постановке проблемы

The legacy of Saint Dimitry of Rostov, Metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl’ (1651-1709), the Orthodox saint and one of the most prominent Slavonic authors, has always attracted much attention. His works have been the obj ect of study of both Russian and foreign scholars. The paper puts forward one of the most topical issues in the study of Dimitry’s writing, namely unresearched, unpublished and previously unavailable works of the Saint. These are discovered in manuscript collections which were compiled and came out of Rostov scriptorium (some of them are original manuscripts from the Metropolitan’s library), as well as in collections of his sermons. The paper examines main manuscripts with these texts from the National Library of Russia, State Historical Museum, Russian State Archive of Ancient Records. The author of the paper, on the one hand, summarises and analyses previous studies of this topic (the works of I. A. Shlyapkin, A. A. Kruming, L. A. Yankovskaya and others) and, on the other hand, makes available new, unknown and unpublished works of Saint Dimitry of Rostov. These include hagiographic texts (brief Lives of Saints for September), sermons on moveable and fixed feasts, dramatic texts (the declamation «Repentant Sinner»), historical works («Historical Calender») and hymnographic writings («Service for the Saint Nine Martyrs of Cyzicus»). The author considers that sermons constitute one of the largest parts of Saint Dimitry’s legacy. The problems of attribution of many speeches and homilies (i.e. the authorship of certain texts) are therefore still topical and are paid special attention.

«Abraham’s children» and «devil’s children»: Controversy over the interpretation of John 8, 37-47 in Russian pre-revolutionary Biblical studies

Iurevich Dmitrii (2014) "«Abraham’s children» and «devil’s children»: Controversy over the interpretation of John 8, 37-47 in Russian pre-revolutionary Biblical studies ", Vestnik Pravoslavnogo Sviato-Tikhonovskogo gumanitarnogo universiteta. The paper describes a discussion as to the interpretation of Jn 8. 44 between the professors of Moscow and Kiev Theological Academies M. M. Tareev and D. I. Bogdashevsky (the future bishop Vasiliy). The discussion took place in 1903—1904 in the academic journals Богословский вестник (Theological Bulletin) and Труды Киевской духовной академии (Proceedings of Kiev Theological Academy). On the basis of the original Greek text of Jn 8. 44, M. M. Tareev rejected the traditional translation «for he [the devil] is a liar and the father of it [the lie]» and proposed his own variant based on the conception that God is the Creator of the whole creation and therefore Father of all: «he [the devil] says... that the liar is his Father too [God]». D. I. Bogdashevskiy advocated the traditional view not only examining the specifics of the Biblical texts but also putting forward theological arguments. The controversy demonstrated the necessity of an integrated approach to the study of the Bible.
